A slight break from the political chaos here, though still highly relevant to the themes of this Substack.
I recently reread C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia from start to finish. I hadn’t read the books since childhood, and many things surprised me. Lewis’s frequent amusing asides, his scathing assessments of certain characters, how whimsical it is in some parts, and how moving in others.
I also noted Lewis’s unsparing appraisal of the liberal modern world, for example in his description of the progressive ‘Experiment House’ school, and his clear disapproval of the character Susan forsaking Narnia for trivial teenage preoccupations.
As such, I decided to make a video looking at five key moments in the saga that highlight the stark contrast between Lewis’s understanding of morality, and what is seen as good and normal in our materialist, utilitarian society.
As ever, you can listen to the audio version above, but I recommend watching the video, as I made an effort with the production!
Have a look and let me know what you think. But only if it’s positive, obviously.
Thanks,
Nick
