I've learned a lot from these streams about how they created a fake version of Powell to undermine him and how different the actual man was. And they're still using all the same tricks today.
I’m old enough to remember Enoch’s infamous speech and the media spazz-out it caused, even though I was only about ten at the time. I also watched this Frost interview (everyone watched Frost - there being only two channels, and ITV was considered a bit ‘edgier’).
Even at that tender age I thought Enoch was the righteous dude, morally and intellectually, even though I wouldn’t have been able to articulate it then. It was a feeling, and the same feeling I had when my elder brothers returned from one term at University spouting postmodern bollocks. I didn’t know why it was bollocks, but just knew instinctively it was bollocks in the same way you could always see through your brother who was trying to cover up or lie about something they’d done or not done. In the same way you could intuit that Powell was in the right, and that his opponents were putting on a show of being virtuous in that 60’s way, even though some of them no doubt believed their own cosplay. But people went along with it because it was part of that whole post-war trend. Amazing to see the recrudescence of all that with BLM and Palestine. It’s the same thing happening all over. Or is it the last gasp? If only.
But now I’m truly convinced about Powell being an extraordinary man, thanks in no small part to your efforts, Nick, and also of course Simon Heffer’s magnum opus biography of Powell (which I haven’t read yet, but hope to do so, soon but has prompted you, Nick, to rightly advocate for the man to be recognised and heard).
