Thank you Nick, I remember many of these being released and some I have never heard of, once again you broaden my horizons. Thank you for helping me make some sense out of the plight our United Kingdom iand the West s now suffering . Your No 1 from the list is an excellent choice. I rewatched The Most Reluctant Convert the other evening and am oft reminded of something CS Lewis stated "It is important to keep people aware about the question of truth, for Christianity is not recommended because it is good, but because it is true. We must not elevate the importance of goodness over truth. For if Christianity is false it is of no importance and if true of infinite importance the one thing it cannot be is moderately important.

Anyway, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Good list. For me though, being from Wolverhampton, it has to be Slade. I actually saw Dave Hill’s Slade playing their penultimate gig on Saturday night in Birmingham, finishing with Merry Xmas Everybody. It’s good to see him still going strong and loving what he does at 79. Talking of Roy Wood, I pass his house occasionally as he lives not far from me in Derbyshire.

Thanks for those Nick. I had no idea Holst composed that hymn. Anyway, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year 😊🎅🎄. Thank you for all you have done this year. You've helped keep at least me sane. Oh, and a Merry Christmas to all on here.

Thankyou Nick, your number one, In the Bleak Midwinter

has long been my number one, but I also love O Holy Night……….just magical……Enjoy the best of Christmasas, we’re all in this together!!!

Nick Dixon's avatar

Thanks Pauline. I put so much effort into these things and get some really stupid responses. Happy Christmas🌲

All good choices, excellent, in fact. Holst’s arrangement of ‘In the bleak midwinter’ probably takes the mince pie for me.

Great list Nick. Did you ever hear a version of ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ by Paper Aeroplanes? Absolutely floored me when I heard it.

Nick Dixon's avatar

Thanks. That is a nice version.

Thanks for these Nick. A good mix, and some I’ve not heard of before. It’s so difficult to choose but mine would be Wizard, I Wish it could be Christmas Everyday and Little Donkey. The latter because at school we’d visit old people’s homes to sing carols including this song which I never hear now! And, typical of me, I felt sorry for the donkey carrying the heavy load along the dusty road. Lol. Happy Christmas Nick. I hope you can at least visit your brother today. I’m never quite sure if you prefer the solitude. Either way, all the best to you and looking forward to hearing from you in 2026 xx

Love Little Donkey. Happy Christmas 🎄

Thank you - I've saved this on Spotify because my husband is always looking for "alternative" Christmas songs in a bid to keep up his indie credentials 😆 Happy Christmas 🎄

Some great choices, Nick. In the Bleak Midwinter (Christina Rossetti wrote the wonderful words I'm sure you knew) is my own favourite carol. Hark The Herald Angels is a great rousing one to end any service though, I admit, so it is hard to pick one from the standards above the others.

Anyway, I am glad I am not the only one who is still a sucker for the Mariah Carey song. I never get tired of it. Maybe it was the last of the real classic pop Christmas records.....and decades after the '70s peak (in my opinion as a boomer). All the best for Christmas and an upward trajectory for your work in 2026.

Yes and the meter doesn’t quite fit the music, I’d have changed the words slightly. Happy Christmas!

lol ! Some women don't do detail.... ATB.

Nick Dixon's avatar

Well she wrote it as a poem. Composer tried to fit the words into the melody, which leads to some strange phrasing. Still great though.

I love the Holst. But it will be 41*C in Perth tomorrow so I might listen to Making Gravy by Paul Kelly or that Tim Minchin song instead. Have a very merry Christmas and thank you for doing this list ❤️

I’m with your Mum on the Darke vs Holst discussion, although the latter is probably more accessible for congregational singing. The final verse always brings a lump to my throat regardless of which version I’m singing. God bless and wishing you a joyful Festive Season.

Thanks Nick, your musical knowledge is incredible and very broad.

Just wanted to mention Chris Rea, sad to hear of his passing yesterday.
