I'd literally just finished the final episode when your post notification popped up. As a fellow lover of the novel I found the TV show threw it all away in the hope of a second season.
This is so common and is resulting in so much TV slop at the expense of good storytelling. There was imo a lot to like about the early episodes but they jettisoned the longing, darkness and paranoia for some teen drama. Your review nails it anyway. Back to the books
