This special edition of The Current Thing is a tribute to Charlie Kirk, including a discussion about the good and evil responses to his death, and what this terrible incident means for the future of America and the world.
Heard the "he supported the 2nd amendent, ironic" position from a colleague today, had to get up and walk away in disgust before hearing worse. This and poor Iryna, the kids shot in a Church only a fortnight ago, every week it gets worse. God help us. It is demonic, Jezebel cursed him two days before! It's hard not to see this as spiritual sickness, speaking as someone who was atheist until a couple of years ago, it feels undeniable since lockdowns.
Thank-you for doing this Nick, I was hoping you would do something, I can't take in what has happened and listening to yourself and Simon talk it through has helped.
I am sickened by those who have responded in a derogatory way, I just don't understand how we have come to this.
Thankfully I have not seen the footage.
I remember the first time I heard Charlie debating and I was so impressed. I admired him in many ways, his murder is devastating and unbelievable.
My heart goes out to his wife, children and family, how will they ever come to terms with this.
Thank you both - that was a very informative and sensitively balanced discussion. Simon is always astonishingly well informed and altogether too modest in my view. Curiously I feel somewhat soothed and calmed listening to you both here after 48 hours close to despair following on X. Have a good weekend - I’m now going to have a Negroni. Cheers!
A very thoughtful, decent conversation covering something truly horrific. Charlie Kirk was definitely on the outer reaches of my radar and only now do I realise what a unique human being he was. May his soul rest in peace. I feel so sad for his wife & children. As for the online haters, I console myself with the knowledge he was loved & admired by so many. The haters will never ever experience that level of respect, love & admiration. In the end I feel nothing but pity for them. Thank you both for dealing with this tragedy in such a sensitive way.
I agree. It came up on my Twitter feed & I’d seen it before I could comprehend what I was watching. So horrific & senseless. R.I.P Charlie Kirk. What an amazing man.
It did set me thinking what would my reaction be if a political opponent I really hated was murdered. I came up with a couple of names and thought I don`t hate them so much to welcome their death as "karma" and post how they had it coming. The fact that so many do possess such hatred is frightening. There again, we see it every week with the Jew hate pro Hamas nazi marches. Final observation, a fair few people I know and am friends/friendly with thought Mrs. Thatcher`s death was a cause for celebration.
Thank you so much for this Nick and Simon - your discussion was so thoughtful. As a fellow Non-American (Aussie) I also really appreciate hearing your views that put this tragic event in a wider context too.
I have also felt somehow separated from the world for the past two days because of this. I have very few political conversations with people in my day to day life so have been listening to commentary online such as from Lotus Eaters, who did a good podcast yesterday. I've been looking forward to hearing from you, and thanks for talking with Simon. You're both measured and deep thinkers, which is what we need in these dark times.
Instead of X having so many videos of Charlie being shot wouldn't it be nice if from now on prominent accounts just posted Charlie doing his debates. Do the same anywhere anyone with reach has a social media account.
Looking forward to this I love Simon Evans, great thinker on top of everything else!!!

Nick, Paul, Simon and Leo were by far the best thing on GB News.
The Four Horsemen.
Excellent video lads.
The close up video was one of the worst things I've ever seen, absolutely devastating. God rest him.

Yep, same here. I wish I'd never seen it but this is the reality of the evil we are facing. He was by all accounts a decent chap R.I.P

Love your work as always!
